The stupidest thing Plaxico Burress ever did was shoot himself in the leg. The smartest thing he did was try to cover it up, because he just got fucked.

Former New York Giants receiver Plaxico Burress pleaded guilty Thursday to a weapons charge and agreed to a two-year prison term for accidentally shooting himself at a Manhattan nightclub.

Burress pleaded guilty to one count of attempted criminal possession of a weapon, a lesser charge than he initially faced. Under a plea agreement, he agreed to a two-year prison sentence and two years of supervised release.

Two years! For an extra year in prison he could have raped somebody.

Personally, the only way this affects me is that Plaxico is going in just as Michael Vick comes out. An NFL wide receiver AND quarterback in federal prison at the same time? I smell a Longest Yard sequel!

Doesn't two years feel like a really long time for a crime that didn't hurt anybody? A year would have felt like alot. Six months feels right. Two years, for basically the same crime committed by these parties, who will not face any jail time:

[Giants linebacker Antonio] Pierce was not indicted. The grand jury also did not indict the nightclub security guard who carried the gun to Pierce's car or the hospital staff members who failed to notify police that Burress had been shot.
I do not see a distinction between the crimes of Burress, Pierce, the security guard, and the hospital employees. Burress illegally possessed the gun. Then the security guard illegally possessed it. Then Pierce illegally possessed it. The hospital employees contributed to the attempted cover up. Yet Burress does two years and the others aren't even indicted?

I gotta totally agree with you. Donte Stallworth KILLED a man and got 28 days! Michael Vick KNOWINGLY murdered multiple dogs and Burress will do about the same amount of time for ACCIDENTALLY SHOOTING HIMSELF. Intent needs to be more of a factor when punishments are doled out for crimes.

Also...what the hell does "attempted criminal possession of a weapon" mean? Does that mean that the gun was floating off of his body when it was fired and he was trying to grab it but missed?

Its almost not even fair to bring up Stallworth. The 28 day sentence for killing a dude makes any sentence for anything look ridiculous. The Stallworth sentence is like Barry Bonds' home run record: yeah, we know its there, but we're going to pretend it didn't happen, because otherwise everything looks slanted and it makes your head hurt.

Well I wonder what the punishment would be for Burress if he shot himself in Florida instead of New York.

Shooting himself was not the crime; illegally posessing a handgun in New York City was.

Had he shot himself in Florida, or any other jurisdiction with sensible gun legislation. (ie, not NYC), he'd be a free man.

Jim is right, guys've been catching this charge in NYC for 15 years. if he was poor he probably would've gotten 3-5 years. busting squeegee men didn't get the murder rate down, this did. don't you watch law & order?

DT: Vick didn't murder dogs, he killed them. To quote wikipedia: "Murder, as defined in common law countries, is the unlawful killing of another human being with intent (or malice aforethought)"

And Dan, it wasn't gun legislation that lowered the murder rate, it was abortion.
